Dundee’s Largest Artist Community Comes Together for Open Studios Weekend

Home to 58 artist studios, Meadow Mill is the largest facility of its kind in the region. Wasps – Scotland’s largest provider of creative spaces – was founded in Dundee in 1977, and acquired Meadow Mill in 1985. Today, the former jute mill provides a vibrant base for a diverse community of creative practitioners, including ceramicists, painters, textile artists, printmakers, sculptors and designers.

The Meadow Mill Open Studios event offers a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and explore the private working spaces where Dundee’s artists develop their ideas, experiment with materials and create new work. Visitors can meet members of the artist community, discover different creative practices and get an insight into the process behind the finished product.

One of the artists participating in the Open Studios weekend is Katie McGroarty, who regularly hosts workshops and life drawing classes from her own space. Katie is looking forward to the event, saying:

It’s such a special building, full of character, history and creative energy, and events like this are a brilliant chance to show the public what happens here every day. As artists, we spend so much time making, testing ideas and sharing skills through workshops, so it feels exciting to invite people in, talk about the work and celebrate the community that makes Meadow Mill such an inspiring place to be.

Kate Gray, Wasps CEO, has said of the upcoming weekend:

Meadow Mill is more than a workspace. It's a place where artists and makers are secure to stay, feel they belong and grow their practice and career. Creative communities need creative infrastructure to thrive, and we're delighted to welcome visitors during Doors Open Days to meet the artists and makers whose work helps define Dundee's cultural identity and makes this such an important creative community.

Whether you are an established art lover, curious about making and design, or simply looking for something different to explore in Dundee, the Open Studios weekend is an opportunity to meet local artists, support creative businesses and be inspired by the work happening inside this historic building.

Today, the building continues that tradition of making, production and creativity, with its historic spaces now the creative home to several generations of artists and designers. Visitors are warmly invited to come along, explore the studios and get to know the people behind the work.
